Day 10 -- Prague Jewish Quarter tour.
Our final day included an optional walking tour of the Jewish Quarter of Prague. Here we aren't yet in the Jewish Quarter, but they are pointing out the art deco mosaics on the balconies of this building...
...and the use of geometric lines and shapes on this one.
Now in the Jewish Quarter; this is the New Old Synagogue. Hitler kept much of this intact to make it a museum to the destroyed race.
This is the Maisel Synagogue...
...which has been converted to a museum of Jewish culture and history.
The original place where they kept the Torah.
Various artifacts. This display had the history of the mythology of golems.
The Pinkasova Synagogue is one of the more holy sites...
...so Wade has to wear a yarmulke.
It pays tribute by listing the names of the 80,000 killed (out of 119,000 total). It was flooded out in the last century, and all of the names had to be repainted.
Some drawings saved from the children in the camps.
In the back is the old cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, they decorate the markers with small stones.
A miniature "wailing wall" with prayers and messages for those in the afterlife.
Two hands with outspread finders indicate the deceased was descended from priestly stock (Kohanim) who blessed the people in this fashion.
Our local guide (right) explaining one of the crypts.
Another synagogue with displays of saved artifacts.
A view into the sanctuary. We went on Sunday where there weren't any services.
A statue honoring the very strange Franz Kafka. You can see the legs of the beetle (Metamorphosis) around the base.
Here is the Spanish Synagogue...
...and its beautiful (almost moorish) interior.
