We took Rick and Karyn to Catalina for Rick's birthday in 2022.
Here's the birthday boy and his lovely wife getting set to sail out of Dana Point.
When we got to the island, we stopped to have a brunch. Kimberly and I split the lobster roll...
...while Karyn had an avocado toast and Rick a more traditional breakfast sandwich.
We walked through the downtown just past the Casino and the surf club.
After checking in, we got a quick training tour...
...and started getting geared up.
Here's Ricky fully equipped.
Kimberly getting adjusted...
...and ready to go.
Karyn all set up...
...and finally Wade.
Our illustrious guides, Matt and Erin.
The bus takes us to the top of the hill, and there are five lines going down.
We stop for a quick view down into the city of Avalon...
...and continue to the top where they have gate access to the first tower.
The view from the first sending tower out to the receiving tower..
...and the view back after having gone.
Here's Kimberly coming about halfway across...
...and coming in for a landing.
Unfortunately, she didn't quite get far enough...
...so Matt had to throw her a line...
...and manually bring her in the last 20 feet.
Here comes the birthday boy.
You hit a braking mechanism that starts to slow down your pulley assembly...
...and then Matt pushes you up onto the unloading platform.

...and hitting the braking mechanism.

Here's Kimberly on a full run to give a sense of how it looks.
To start, you just have to jump off the platform.
At first, it feels like your arms are going to have to hold on tight...
...but then your body weight lands primarily on the harness and pulleys...
...and off you go.
The sending guide puts you up on the box and does the 10-point inspection...
...and then you step down, she unhooks the safety line and opens the gate.
You take a leap of faith...
...and fly through the air.
Kimberly coming in for another landing...
...and Karyn...
...and Ricky.
The weather was absolutely perfect, a hot and clear day.
