Day 11 -- Verona sightseeing, farewell dinner.
Today we start with a sightseeing tour of Verona, starting with the Castel Vecchio (old castle).
The view the other direction along the Adige river.
These swallowtail battlements signify which party the castle supports.
A look down the river from the battlements.
Crossing the bridge into the castle proper.
The defensive tower is left open on the inside, so if the tower is taken by invaders, it cannot be used to attack inward toward the rest of the castle.
On the drawbridge.
This arch was moved over here to get it out of the road.
You can see how Verona was situated on this big oxbow.
A Roman colosseum dating back 2,000 years, the second largest in the Roman empire.
It used to be even larger, but an earthquake took down most of the outer shell, execpt for this one end.
Wandering through the shoppping streets.

The Jewish synagogue.
This is a 15th century building, decorated with full statues instead of just heads.
More shopping opportunities in the main piazza.
This is a 12th century building, denoted by the stripes of sandstone and brick.
The raised crypts of the Mostino family.
They believe this is where Romeo and Juliet met at a party.
Down the street toward the big crowd in front of Juliet's house. It turns out that Shakespeare's version of "Romeo and Juliet" was taken from an Italian story written 200 years earlier. Going back to this story, people have put together the history of who the two families actually were.
Going for a treat at Pasticceria Flego.
All of the scrumptious sweets on display.
Our treats for the day are tramezzini, a type of triangular finger sandwich.
Our group all assembled in the private room.
We try tuna with onion, tuna with capers, and sliced meat and cheese.
A little spare time for browsing takes us to Piazza Vista, where there are unearthed Roman ruins. We share our last gelato of the trip.
The farewell dinner that evening is at the restaurant that is part of the winery we are staying at.
Of course, more meat and some giardiniera for an appetizer.
Our pasta course.
Our secondi: a turkey roulade.
And a selection of desserts.
