Day 8 was our free day, and after looking around at other things to do, we found that New Orleans has a very large and highly-rated World War II museum, and it was only about five blocks from our hotel.
In the Victory Theater, they show a 30-minute "four-D" presentation of the history of the war. It is narrated by Tom Hanks, and is one of the best presentations of the history of war we have seen.
It was almost lunch time by the time we saw the presentation, so we went to the "Soda Shoppe" that was attached to the museum.
Back in the normal galleries of the theater.
The second special presentation was the U.S.S. Tang Experience, where you assume the identity of one of the sailors aboard the Tang, a submarine, on its last mission.
Here is the captain briefing us on our mission. It looks more realistic in person; the camera shows too clearly the projection screen.
We were assigned the torpedo launch station, where Kimberly bravely mans the controls.
We have surfaced, and you can see ships on the horizon.
Wade focuses on his mission, until he figures out that the controls we are given don't do anything, and we just watch the show.
Success! We have sunk one of the ships in the enemy convoy. But they did mention that this was the Tang's last mission, and we all die.
Back in the regular galleries, we go back and forth between the European and Pacific theaters, mapping out the history of the war.
We take the elevator up to the top levels of this gallery, but the only thing there is a better view of this bomber.
That evening, we go out for another decadent meal, this time at Restaurant August.
This amuse bouche is an egg dish served to whet the appetite.
A delightful gnocchi appetizer with shaved truffle and several nice cheeses.
Wade had the trout August, served with a variety of seafood and mushrooms on top, and a Hollandaise foam.
Kimberly had the duck breast served on a pumpkin puree.
