For our free day, we chose the excursion to Guimaraes.
It features a statue of the first unifying king Afonso Henriques.
It was built in the 1100's.
Some of it of course has been refurbished.
Our local guide giving us more Portugese history than we could ever remember.
A chapel on the grounds...
...and inside the chapel.
Several knights and important figures are buried here.
We went on to this palace.
We were supposed to get a tour here, but it was "free museum day" in Portugal, and the line was too long.
We settled for taking a look around the architecture...
...and getting a picture with the king.
We went for a tasting of "green wines", so named for the green, lush area they come from,
not because the wine is green in any way.
Then we walking on a walking tour through Guimaraes.
This monument is where we all met back up after free time.
Looking out the old city gate to the slightly newer church, and a new resort area on the hill.
Lunch was in a garden restaurant.
Wade and Kimberly each ordered this octopus, and it was the biggest tentacle we ever ate.
We should have probably split one.
Waiting for everyone to finish up and pay, we saw these kittens playing in the courtyard.
